with basil’s mum

basil is no clown

I had the pleasure of spending some rare time with an old friend a few days ago.

The mother of Basil (RIP) actually.

Sometimes things do come together to create the perfect non storm of connection.

We sat swinging our legs from her wonderful, new verandah. The weather was perfect. Could have been scripted. We were transported on our own friendship stage (cf video).

I truly love those precious moments of a collective soul sigh. Thank God for old friends. Old Nick Cave loving friends.

And then I remembered I had written about friendship before so I won’t go on again.
(And if I do say so myself, I don’t need to. I think that old post, bursting with profundity, says it all… I could be kidding, wink…)

what depths…

do we plumb

with our layers of numb?

definitions we seek

and the rhymings we tweak

existentially freeze framed

monumentally no named.

aphonic.

tectonic,

politically

bubonic.

mind’s exhale so twee

but my heart

is on its knees…

An American friend shared this article about Stanislav Petrov on Facebook today. I had never heard of him, I am ashamed to say. If you have the time, read the article and watch the clip. I promise you, it is worth the time. And honestly, I dare you to not cry.

(From article: In 1983, he was on duty when the Soviet Union’s early warning satellite indicated the U.S. had fired nuclear weapons at his country. He suspected, correctly, it was a false alarm and did not immediately send the report up the chain of command. Petrov died at age 77.)

the man who saved the world

RIP you remarkable man.

on her owl backpack,

“Doctor Vanessa,

she does have blood in her wing

so she’ll be fine.

But there’s no milk

or strawberries

or blue berries.

Or furpleberries…”

“But she’s allergic to furpleberries” I remind her.

“Oh yeah, don’t give her furpleberries”.

Serious silence sinews our thoughts together.

“Dr Vanessa,

I took off her heart

so she won’t be sick anymore.”

“Why, Dr Bailee,

you’re a genius…”

After contemplating the important work we’ve accomplished,

eight year old niece decides we need a song. Her currently favourite song.

(If you are so inclined, please sing and dance with us):

a funny thing happened as I was reading by the river…the sunset decided to be amazing so I lifted my phone, got distracted by the changing view, inadvertently hit the reverse camera button AND another button I didn’t know activated the camera, all in a matter of seconds. What’s important here is that the end product looks thoughtful.

Unheard Incantations: A Collaborative Poem

I just can’t not share this. Adore.

Go Dog Go Café

The words we cannot say
Will be wept
Into silence between us (CER)

Breathe deep, dear love;
Be still with me
Listen to my heartstrings
A song meant just for you (KMA)

Each tear
An eloquent elegy
To tortured truths (AP)

Each note played
On a hand carved lute
Strung with strips
Of my soul (JWL)

Your breathless aura
Beats in time
Undulating ululation
With my exhaled psyche (AP)

Intertwined, tangled,
Unified: whole
Healed. (JWL)

Yet with hearts torn open
Bleeding out the notes of our song
You turned from me (ME)

I am fire
Drowning
In desire
Weep
I beg
Save me (1W-W)

Fetch me an instrument,
For the untrained ear
Is soothed by that
Which it cannot comprehend. (LEL)

Not everything is black and white.
For even the eclipsed moon
Is not without a little light. (SD)

Whispers through the distance
I remember
As you reach for my…

WordPress Anniversary… holy…

So check it out (edit) it has actually been a year today since I started my blog!

And I am a little drunk right now for all kinds of reasons, so I don’t plan to wax long and lyrical about what a freaking honour it has been. Okay, maybe just a little…it has been so great, the people I have met, and the inspiration you have all given me…and some of you, what not to write about!!! Gawd!!! (Maybe I’m talking about myself, I mean, Good Lord, do you go back and read some of what you have written and wonder what the?!?!?! No, probably not, because you are all pretty amazing.)

Okay, I need a moment to top up my glass ( 19 Crimes if you must know…their red blend is extraordinarily good but I am slumming it on the cab sauv, which is pretty darn delish, even for a non cab sauv drinker…)

This non occasion needs an appropriate musical highlight and I couldn’t help thinking of this clip. I so love it because the words are so not me and Emma nails it, (she also reminds me of a young friend who is a lot of fun!) plus, we were at the local Lutheran primary school concert tonight, and the year 7s did a dance routine to a small part of this. Hahaha (wish I had had this wine first…)

So cheers Lovely Readers. I don’t know what I really think about having ‘followers’ … social media is a mysterious beast, but I really do appreciate those of you who have been supportive. Thank you so much. 💋

Um, this post may disappear in the morning light… we will see. ❤
